FISHES IN GOLFO DULCE
Golfo Dulce is a haven for myriad fish species, including sharks, tuna, and billfish. Many species spawn and/or develop inside the embayment; indeed, it is officially a "sanctuary" for critically endangered scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini). Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) occasionally visit, with historical sightings of over twenty at a time. Eight-two species of fish were identified in just one mangrove community. And coral reefs also provide habitat for numerous species. Needlefish (Tylosurus crocodilus fodiator and T. acus pacificus) are a key food source for dolphins.
